Larry Lohn - A Memorial

As some of you may know, Larry passed away on February 20th after a long battle with COPD. His obituary was published in the San Marcos Daily Record (http://www.sanmarcosrecord.com/obituaries/larry-lynn-lohn) and the Brady Standard-Herald.

But here is what his obituary said:

Larry Lynn Lohn, 72, passed peacefully in his sleep in the comfort of his home and surrounded by his family on Feb. 20, 2016 in San Marcos, Texas. A celebration of his life will be held at Westover Baptist Church in San Marcos at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016.

He was born in Brady, Texas on Feb. 10, 1944 to Lincoln and Buna Lohn. His parents raised him to be a doer. He grew cotton and maize on his family’s farm in Lohn, Texas. Since then, he worked harder than a … well, a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest, as he would like to say. Quick to offer help or advice on how to do it right, he spent a career using his strong hands and sharp mind to serve the people that he knew and loved. He taught science, math and automotive at Gary Job Corp, was a vocational counselor for San Antonio Independent School District, was a vocational counselor at Hays High School where he worked with Explorer Scouts, was a maintenance supervisor for Thermon Manufacturing, and was an educational counselor at Kyle Correctional Facility.

He loved hunting, fishing, camping, and most of all, grilling. He spent many late nights and early mornings slaving over a hot grill. He cooked more than 30, 000 BBQ chickens – dressed with his very own special rub and sop – for the Boy Scouts, San Marcos High School Choir and Band, a Motorcycle Rally at Canyon Lake, 4-H, Future Farmers of America, Order of the Eastern Star, Kyle Correctional Facility and AFS Foreign Exchange Students.

In addition to numerous volunteer organizations, Larry was also a Master Mason in good standing of the Prairie Lea Lodge, No. 114. He was a Past Master and longtime member. He always maintained a great respect for the Masonic organizations and all their good works.

Larry was a life-long learner. He graduated from Lohn High School in 1962 at the top of his class – a class of 6 people as he liked to boast. While attending Southwest Texas State College, he was active in Texas Student Education Association, Future Farmers of America, Delta Tau Alpha, Alpha Phi Omega, was named a Who’s Who in American Colleges, was a Gaillardian nominee, and served as a dorm counselor. He graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education and went on to earn a Masters Degree in Agriculture Education. He also earned certifications in Academic and Vocational Guidance Counseling, as well as a certification in Horticulture. But, the most important thing he got out of college was meeting his wife and partner, Carol.

As the story goes, Carol rented Larry’s old apartment. When he came by to pick up his mail, she answered the door in a housecoat and curlers. “I hope you’re not wearing that when I come pick you up for dinner tonight,” he said. Being a poor starving college student, she couldn’t resist. And that was the start of a whirlwind romance. They met in August, were engaged on Halloween and married Dec. 2, 1966. They celebrated forty nine years of marriage, raised three children and hosted three foreign exchange children together.

Larry is survived by his wife Carol, son Carl, son Chris and daughter-in-law Vlada, daughter Sarah, and aunt Eunice. His extended family also includes Jan Röhmer of Switzerland, Maja Blumenhage of Germany and Olga Kriuchkov of Ukraine.

His family would like to extend a special thanks to Heart to Heart Hospice for the care they provided him in his final days. Now, he’s in heaven telling jokes, and perhaps, even firing up the grill.

And here is a copy of the memorial slideshow that was shown at his service on Feb. 27, 2016 at the Westover Baptist Church in San Marcos, Texas.
